IoT Platform with LoRa for Monitoring and Managing Consumption in Ports, Allowing Fair and Efficient Billing

Project Information

Project Name: IoT Platform for Consumption Management in Recreational Boats

Industry/Sector: Maritime / IoT Technology

Challenge: The ports of the Balearic Islands faced the need to modernize and make the management of electrical and drinking water consumption in recreational boats more efficient. The solution had to allow accurate accounting of consumption, adapting to the unique characteristics of the maritime environment and ensuring sustainability and operational efficiency.

Implemented Solution

General Description: Arteco Consulting SL developed an advanced IoT platform, using LoRa wireless devices for metering the consumption of electricity and drinking water in recreational boats. The devices, installed in the moorings, transmit consumption data to gateways in the port, which, in turn, send the information to a cloud platform. From the cloud, data is distributed via the MQTT protocol to a Spring Boot service that processes and manages the information, offering essential functionalities for both the port managers' back office and a React Native application used by technicians for sensor maintenance and configuration.

Technologies Used: The implementation included the use of LoRa devices for data collection, leveraging their low power consumption and wide transmission range. The cloud platform acts as the central core for information distribution, while the MQTT protocol facilitates efficient communication with the backend service developed in Spring Boot. The application for technicians was created with React Native, allowing intuitive and real-time interaction with the system.

Key Features: This system stands out for its ability to accumulate consumption, taking into account the length of stay for each boat, enabling fair and accurate billing. The solution is highly scalable, capable of adapting to different sizes of ports and numbers of boats. The implemented IoT architecture ensures low maintenance and efficient operation, significantly reducing environmental impact and optimizing water and electricity resources.

Results: The IoT platform has transformed consumption management in the ports of the Balearic Islands, offering port managers a powerful tool to monitor and control resource consumption efficiently. The ease of maintenance and configuration of the devices has improved daily operations, while end users (boat owners) benefit from a transparent and fair billing system.

Conclusions

This project reflects the ability of Arteco Consulting SL to innovate in the application of IoT technologies in challenging and specific environments such as maritime ports. The creation of this comprehensive platform for consumption management in recreational boats highlights Arteco's commitment to environmental sustainability, operational efficiency, and continuous improvement in service delivery.
